Straw Bale Building

We are very proud of our Straw Bale building.
Not only does it keep us warmer in Winter and cooler in Summer, due to the construction and cross ventilation, it is the home, not only of our office, workshop, Information Centre but a great meeting place and the perfect size to cater for tour groups.

That is a lot of straw!

Workshop was held during construction to teach those
present how to construct using straw bales

Aspect was vital in placement of the building

3 coats of cement render went over the chicken wire

No timber at the bottom (apart from windows and door frames) is what is called
Load bearing walls.
These are stronger, with a longer life expectancy than timber frame,

And now we get to play at last!

The adding of the covered deck has enhanced the uses in all weathers

We are proud to have our Worimi people, the original owners of the land, to welcome us all to country and help with questions and advice.
(And of course our politicians)

Bastille Day
It is now home for our monthly BBQ and various celebrations

and of course Art Workshops involving painting, drawing, pottery and Floral Art

A lot of progress has been made in the years since our building was constructed, using different techniques, renders etc. We hope more people consider this form of construction and our building is open for you to pop in and see what works in ours.
More information on this type of construction can be found at

  1. How’s it holding up? I’m am planning to build but worried about building a lean to roof on load bearing straw because of the uneven distribution of weight. Have you run into any issues with this? Thanks!
